I have to admit that Battleship: Search and Destroy by International Game Technology was facing an uphill slope with me right off the bat. I was never a fan of the game as a child, and the thought of reliving the game that I was forced to play dozens of times as a child was not very attractive to me.
Still, I powered through my hatred of the board game and tried to give the Battleship pokie as unbiased a review as possible.
Is this game worth your time?
The Battleship: Search and Destroy pokie was launched several years ago by IGT, and its age is definitely showing here. The game looks rudimentary to me, and I have to say that I would put it on par with RTG styled games in terms of looks.
The graphics are all relatively simple looking, and end up not being anything special. Besides the obligatory battleships, you are treated to a bland looking bonus symbol and traditional pokie symbols such as 10, J, Q, K, and A. This is a shame, as a game like battleship should be able to give more inspiration to a game’s developers than tired pokie symbols.
Animations are also pretty blasé, with blinking symbols being the main thing you see here. There are some other effects such as explosions and such, but these are nothing to write home about.
I am pretty disappointed at IGT’s attempt at making this game look palatable, as the graphics and animations here are subpar. This company could have done a lot more with Battleship: Search and Destroy.
Fortunately, Battleship: Search and Destroy plays better than it looks. The game features a Pick’em bonus round, Free Spins, and Expanding Wilds that can really boost up your wins.
I myself never went through a real dry spell while playing Battleship, but I also hit the bonus rounds pretty infrequently as well. When I did hit the Pick’em round, I was treated to a Battleship like game where I had to try to sink my opponent’s ships. Doing so resulted in some nice cash prizes, but I was unable to hit this round very often.
Free Spins are also an infrequent treat, but the one time I did hit it I scored a $130 win total. The best bonus was the expanding wild, which comes up way more often and sets up nice wins with the pokie’s 25 paylines.
Overall, I really did try to like Battleship: Search and Destroy, but had a hard time overcoming the dated look and feel of this online pokie. There are simply too many games that look and play nicer to really consider Battleship to be a great option.
Unless you are a fan of the board game, I’d recommend staying away from this mediocre pokie.
Overall: C
