Pixies of the Forest, from IGT, has to be one of the most beautifully-designed pokies on the market, filled with incredibly detailed images of pixies and a forest, which is unsurprising really, given the name of the game. It’s been a big success across the globe and has a universal appeal at both land-based and online casinos that feature the IGT range.
There’s 5 reels, an impressive 99 paylines and symbols lined up over 3 rows, with wins occurring any time 3, 4 or 5 of the same type land across any line running on adjacent reels from the left. On top of regular wins in the base game, there’s a free spins round where extra wilds are added to the mix, and IGT’s Tumbling Reels feature which can create win after win in a single spin.
This is one of those games that’s best seen for real, as mere words can’t do justice to the great attention to detail it’s been created with. The forest sits in the background, there’s a nice Celtic design to the framework surrounding the main portion of the game, and leaves trail down to divide up the individual reels. The only downside is that some of the symbols are the conventional playing card icons Q, K and A, but we can’t have everything, and even these are nicely presented.
A minimum of 33 coins, at values of 0.01 to 1.00 each, is needed to unlock all lines, and wins are listed on the paytable as the number of coins won for each combination. The Q pays just a single coin when it lands on 3 reels, 5 of them when it stops across 4 reels, and 25 coins when it fills a payline. K and A are worth a little more, but higher up the scale we find the beautiful pixies themselves, starting with the blonde who pays 5, 30 or 150 coins, then it’s on to the brunette who is worth 10, 50 or 400 coins and players need to land the purple-haired pixie on 3, 4 or 5 reels to win 15, 200 or 1000 coins.
Top prizes however, come from the Pixies of the Forest game logo, and this intricately-designed icon pays 20, 400, or a huge 2000 coins when it lands in the right spots.
The Tumbling Reels feature will occur with every winning spin and sees the symbols that were part of the win disappearing, which leaves space for those above to subsequently fall in to. New symbols drop down from above the game and the whole effect can be for a new set of winning lines to be created, which will repeat the Tumbling Reels again and again until no winning combinations are on the reels.
Other bonuses come from some special symbols, with a wild that will act as any other, apart from the bonus symbol, to complete winning lines, although it will only appear on the middle 3 reels in the base game and isn’t worth anything on its own.
The bonus symbol needs to land on 3 reels across a payline to take players to the main bonus game, but before this free spins round starts, there’s a simple process of clicking a ‘Choose’ symbol to reveal how many free games will play out. Once they are running, there’s an extra wild added to reel 1, and richer reels across all but the right hand one, so it should be a bit easier to land more wins throughout them.
Unusually, players can’t retrigger the bonus games from within the round, so once they’re done, they’re done, but at least the Tumbling Reels are still in effect, so there’s the potential for plenty of prizes.
Pixies of the Forest may be a fantastic pokie to look at, but is it any good to play? Well, it certainly has a few interesting points, particularly the Tumbling Reels, but it’s not all good news.
The free spins game can result in just a small number being awarded, and maybe it’s being a bit picky, but when symbols create a winning line, there’s several seconds of animations before they disappear and new ones fall into the empty spaces.
Some players will want things to move along a bit quicker, because until the animation is done, there’s nothing they can do other than sit and watch symbols flashing on and off a few times before they vanish. It’s hardly going to ruin anyone’s day, so players shouldn’t be put off by a minor detail in what is overall an excellent game.
