Chief's Magic Pokie Machine

The game might be called Chief’s Magic but there’s very little magic going on with this rock-bottom basic pokie from Microgaming. It will certainly appeal to players who like to just spin the reels and see what happens however, so whether it’s of any interest to you depends on personal taste. If 3-reel pokies are not your thing, then this one probably isn’t the game that’s going to change your opinion.

At least the theme of Native Americans is quite popular and the game has a fairly simple image of the Chief to bring a little bit of life to proceedings, while the 3 reels with their solitary win line are stuffed up in the top corner. The rest of the screen is taken up by a paytable, and a quick look at this reveals nothing we haven’t seen before, with bars and 7’s plus a couple of game-specific icons, like the logo and chief’s head.

All players get to do is choose how much to stake on the game and there’s a decent range of options here, with just 0.25 being the minimum stake. By clicking the + and – buttons, the value of a coin can be further adjusted to 0.50, 0.75, 1.00, 2.00 or 5.00, while between 1 and 3 coins can be used for a maximum bet size of 15.00.

The paytable is split into 3 columns showing what each combination of symbols is worth at 1, 2 or 3 coins, and in general the prizes just go up in proportion to the number of coins played. From the bottom of the paytable we see the any bar icon that rewards players with 1, 2 or 3 coins should the payline have bars stopping across it, while moving up to the single bar symbol will see a payout of 3, 6 or 9 coins.

The double bar carries a value of 5, 10 or 15 coins, and if the triple bars land across the line the subsequent win will be 10, 20 or 30 coins, again dependant on how many coins are in play at the time.

The highest value standard symbol is the red 7, which like the others here is presented in a fairly simple style, with none of the 3D effects or fancy surrounds that many other pokies would have. Anyway, get the 7’s across the line and expect to receive 25, 50 or 75 coins for your efforts.

All very basic so far, and it doesn’t get much more interesting from here on either, with the Chief’s Magic logo symbol having a value of 50, 100 or 150 coins.

The only symbol that doesn’t follow this pattern is the chief’s head, as getting 3 across the line at a single coin bet will pay out 150 coins, while 300 coins will be paid for a 2-coin wager. If the maximum number are being played however, instead of the 450-coin prize that you would expect given all that’s gone before, players receive a win of 600 coins.

And that’s it, that’s the one special feature of this game. No wild substitutions, no bonus games, no nudges or holds, no…..well, you get the idea. Actually, that’s not entirely true, as whenever a winning spin occurs, the chief in the main image will wave a peace pipe around and the logo will flash, but don’t get carried away with the excitement of this as the animation is as basic as they come and lasts about 1 second.

A Tepee Treat, or Just Needs Scalping?

If you’ve managed to get this far, then what’s the verdict on Chief’s Magic. Well, Microgaming know their market and haven’t released this game just to see it disappear up its own totem pole. They know that plenty of people are looking for pokies that work in just this way, with no distracting features whatsoever, and the simplest gameplay possible.

Anyone who is attracted by these types of game will find Chief’s Magic perfectly serviceable and if not exactly fun to play, certainly easy on the brain and relaxing.
