Part of Microgaming’s Rhyming Reels series, Georgie Porgie is based around the classic kids’ nursery rhyme where our hero Georgie kisses the girls and makes them cry, but there’s some fun twists to the tale which make this an all-round entertaining pokie.
Those who remember the rhyme will recognise how the symbols fit in with it, as we have Georgie kissing a girl, her unhappy reaction to the kiss, the boys coming out to play, and Georgie running away from them. It’s all been brought a little up to date with characters dressed in contemporary styles and rather than a school playground, it’s now set on a college campus.
Features include a high-paying free spins round, wild substitutions with multipliers and a gamble game that can potentially boost the amount paid out with each winning spin.
Just to ram home the message that this is from a nursery rhyme, the reels are made to look like they spin against the pages of a book, while a blue backdrop to it all features little ‘X’s’ and a stick-figure running away. It shows that a lot of thought has been put into the design of this game, which continues with the symbols.
Microgaming have a signature style to their high card 10 to A symbols, and it’s carried through here, so they may not be the most interesting of symbols to land, but at least players know what to expect when they do. Wins occur when 3 or more of the same symbol lands across an active payline on adjacent reels, with the line starting off from the left hand one, while the paytable details how many times the coin bet per line will be won each time this happens.
Higher value symbols are the images related to the story, with Georgie running away being the lowest of them, followed by the boys, or in this case college students, coming out to play, the traumatised girl being consoled by her friend, Georgie planting a kiss on her, and finally the geeky-looking Georgie himself being the highest value of the standard icons.
There’s plenty of bonus features in this game, starting with a wild symbol that’s simply the Georgie Porgie logo. It substitutes for all but a scatter symbol to help complete lines of symbols, and should a line consist of wilds on their own, it pays out the biggest wins in the base game.
A minty breath-freshener spray has been chosen as the scatter symbol and maybe if Georgie had used that the girl wouldn’t have cried. It pays out when at least 2 appear on the reels, in any positions, while 3, 4 or 5 of them trigger 15, 20 or 25 free spins respectively. If any more scatters appear during the free spins, an extra spin will be added, while 2 or more will be worth an additional prize of 2x the stake per spin.
Thanks to some nice multipliers, players can win the jackpot of 97,500.00 during the free spins round, with all wins paid out at 5 times their base values. The wild is even more rewarding, as any combinations made up with wild substitutions during the free spins will also be multiplied by 5 times and payouts from just the wild symbol making up a line will be at 25x the normal value.
Of course the amount actually won depends on the size of the bet made, so players have a series of control buttons to determine what stakes they are playing with. There’s 15 paylines here, and players can have as little as 0.01 on a single one, while they can put something on all for a 0.15 minimum bet, or as much as 10.00 on each for a maximum wager of 150.00.
Whatever is won, players are able to gamble the prize, doubling the amount by correctly predicting if a playing card will be revealed as red or black, or quadrupling it by guessing the correct suit. If they get it right, they can go again, but be warned, as a single wrong guess along the way forfeits the triggering payout and any gamble wins so far.
Like all of the Rhyming Reels pokies, Georgie Porgie has been well designed, with some decent bonus features to complement the imagery. The free spins round in particular is something of a treat, although even in the base games there’s plenty to enjoy.
Quite what happened to the pudding and pie of the rhyme will have to remain a mystery but it’s hardly a major distraction from a pokie that has a fun theme.
