The original Girls With Guns pokie caused a bit of a stir when it was first released thanks to a theme based around girls. Who had guns.
It’s proved to be so popular that Microgaming have now released Girls With Guns Frozen Dawn that moves the team of merry mercenaries from the steamy jungles to an arctic landscape, but players need not worry about the colder climate, as the girls are all still wearing clothes that are way too tight for them. They’ll all catch colds if they don’t wrap up warm.
Microgaming could have got away with re-designing the look of the game and keeping the same features, but thankfully they have added a few new twists to the bonus rounds while maintaining some aspects like the 243 Ways to Win layout and expanding wild symbols.
Now we also have a shootout bonus round, wilds that freeze in place and magnetic wilds that move around for the best chances of creating winning lines.
A mountainous scene enhanced with flurries of snow is the chilly backdrop to the 5 reels, which are in turn surrounded by what looks like scaffolding, but whatever it is the game looks good. Rather than having lines for players to activate, this pokie pays out whenever examples of the same symbol land on adjacent reels, although the line of them will need to start from the 1st reel on the left side.
As a result of this format, there’s no option to just try out the game with a tiny bet, with the minimum being 0.30, although players can up their stake to a maximum of 22.50 per spin. Wins are calculated on the value of coins, with the minor symbols being the classic 10, J, Q, K and A, all designed to fit in with the theme.
Higher value symbols are mostly made up of the girls, with Jess, Zoe, Alex, Kira, Maria and Katherine each being given their own special skills, while the remaining regular symbols consist of some glamourous-looking ninjas, the evil Saskia and a mountain lair, presumably where she plans her nefarious deeds.
There’s also a fairly pointless backstory to read, but frankly it’s not going to make any difference to the way the game plays so can be skipped over.
A nice extra feature is the shootout that can be awarded at random following a non-winning spin. We see one of the girls appear in the game and players pick a 10 to A symbol for her to shoot, with a cash prize guaranteed.
While Girls With Guns Frozen Dawn can spin up lots of wins in the base game, it’s the bonus symbols and features that make it stand out. The Girls With Guns logo is a wild symbol that acts as all except the scatter to help make up combinations of symbols that are worth prizes. It’s also a valuable symbol when making up a line on its own, while a special wild can land on the middle reel and expand across it to potentially complete several lines at once.
A satellite represents the scatter symbol which is worth multiples of the total bet when landing in 2 or more positions at once, while 3, 4 or 5 of them will take players to 12 free spins. During the spins, players are randomly assigned either frozen wilds or magnetic wilds, with frozen ones sticking in place for a further 3 spins whenever they appear, before melting away.
If a full reel happens to get covered in wilds, they will stay frozen in place for any remaining free spins.
Magnetic wilds are a new concept, which sees them initially appear on the right hand reel and with each spin they move left across the reels, staying in place throughout any spins that are remaining. If the wilds fill up a reel, they will explode leaving spaces for any other magnetic wilds to slide into.
Girls With Guns Frozen Dawn is a fun successor to the original, which is still available, and manages to update the adventure without throwing away the things that made it so popular, like the attractive ladies and huge weapons.
Exploding and expanding wilds have also been retained, but the real treats are the shootout, which turns a losing spin into a winner, and the frozen or magnetic wilds that will hopefully turn the free spins round into a highly rewarding one.
