Chibeasties are the stars of a 5 reel, 20 payline pokies game from Yggdrasil Gaming , that has expanding symbols, free spins and a Wild symbol that can result in additional wins. The Chibeasties themselves are strange little alien type creatures that I can't decide are cute and cuddly or the sort of thing I have nightmares about, but whatever you think of them, they live in a peaceful forest setting, where equally strange plants inhabit the reels.
Unlike games where players can pick and choose how many lines to place a bet on, Chibeasties is set at a 20 line wager, while the coin value can be set from 0.01 to 2.00, so the bet range is pretty reasonable, but having the option to pick and choose how many lines to wager on would be nice.
The Chibeasties come in different shades and are all dressed up in some kind of tribal wear, with a Red Devil type beastie being the one that carries the highest payouts, going from 25 coins when three land on a win line, up to 750 for a full line of five of the little critter. The dark blue, light blue and orange guys pay out the other major wins in the base game, while the plants reward players with smaller prizes when they appear on a line.
Any time a win occurs, a little animated bolt of energy goes through the symbols that made it up, and the value of the win is shown.
The main features of Chibeasties are triggered by Wild and Free Spins symbols, and just to make sure players know what symbol is what, they are labelled Wild and Free Spins in big bold letters. The Wild is a straightforward substitute for others that helps to complete winning lines of symbols for additional payouts, although if it completes more than one combination following a single spin, only the highest paying one counts. Also, it has no monetary value of its' own, so getting a full line of Wilds for example, won't result in a prize, and as is common with Wilds, it doesn't substitute for any bonus symbols.
The Free Spins symbol is where the real action of Chibeasties is focused. Again, it doesn't have any value of its' own, but works as a Scatter symbol, meaning that it can literally be scattered around the reels in any position to work its' magic and start off the free spins.
Three of them rewards players with 10 free spins, four equals 20 of them, and by getting five Free Spins symbols on screen at once, players will trigger 40 games. Before they start, one symbol will be picked at random as an expanding symbol, and every time it turns up throughout the free spins it will expand across the whole reel that its' on. The higher value the symbol is, the bigger the potential wins can be, and lucky players will get the Wild picked which can lead to win after win for up to 40 spins.
A nice touch is that two wins are possible each time the chosen symbol appears during the free spins round. When the symbol first appears, any wins are paid out, and then it expands and the computer checks for any further wins, although in practice this doesn't happen every time, but it is still an extra little treat.
In fact the whole game is a bit of a treat, and even though it's not the most demanding or feature-filled adventure you will ever see, it's still one that Yggdrasil Gaming should be proud of. The fun design, background music and images make it an easy-going game to play, and the Chibeasties themselves are fairly cute, not really that scary. Most of the action takes place in the free spins round, and it may have been nice to see expanding symbols turn up during the base game, but that's just me being picky.
