Dragon eggs and cute baby dragons are the theme of the Draglings pokie machine, and coming from Polish developer Yggdrasil Gaming, it has the distinct features and style that is typical of their games. Expanding and Spreading Wild symbols, free spins and lines that pay out in both directions all feature, along with some neat animations and an unusual layout to the reels.
The way the reels are arranged is immediately obvious, with the centre on being five rows high, the next two moving out are four high and the outermost reels only have three symbols each, a setup that determines the number of paylines. Like many Yggdrasil pokies, wins can come when three or more of the same symbol line up across a line starting from the left hand reel, which is pretty standard, but also going from right to left, which isn't, and boosts the frequency of wins. It gives a total of 40 lines, while betting options give players the choice of spending as little as 0.20 per spin up to 40.00 a go, with all wins being multiples of the coin amount wagered per line.
Surrounding the reels is a crystal cave, and contained within are the symbols of dragon eggs and the little beasties themselves. Eggs come in different designs, with four of them looking a bit scaly and dull, and four higher paying ones being presented in dazzling colours that make them stand out.
Line up three or more of the same egg and a flash of light zaps across the reels, with a win value displayed as it rewards the player. Watching a bunch of eggs spinning around would get a bit boring after a while, so naturally there's plenty of feature symbols that make it an engaging pokie that will keep players awake.
Firstly, there are three Wild symbols, each with unique properties, starting off with the regular Blue Dragon. This critter works as a standard Wild, replacing other symbols if it will help to complete a winning line, although it has no value of its' own, and getting several Wilds across the reels won't in itself pay anything.
Another Wild is the Purple Dragon, who goes from covering a single position on the middle reel to expanding across it in a flash of energy. This makes the whole reel wild and can result in several winning lines being completed at once.
Last but not least is the Red Dragon and when he, (or she, let's be fair), turns up, it randomly turns between one and four other positions into extra Wilds. This one doesn't tend to turn up quite as often as the other two, but is very welcome when it does, as those extra Wilds can be Purple, Blue expanding ones, or even Reds, which in turn make even more Wilds appear. This can bring in win after win, and is one of the real highlights of Draglings.
The other highlight is the free spins round, which is triggered by the rather predictably named Free Spins symbol. It acts a bit like a Scatter symbol, as it doesn't need to be on a line to start the games, but again, it has no value of it's own which is a shame, but never mind, as once started, the free games can be quite lucrative.
Three Free Spins symbols launch 10 free games, if four land at once, then 20 are awarded, and anyone lucky enough to land five in one go will see 75 free spins start. Just to add a bit of spice to the round, there are more Wilds added to the reels throughout, while only two Free Spin symbols are needed to re-trigger a couple more games.
Draglings is another hit for Yggdrasil Gaming, and is typical of the careful design that goes into all of their pokies. Players may not like the fact that all 40 lines are automatically wagered on, but coin values can be set very low, and betting 0.20 per spin shouldn't break anyone's bank.
The basic gameplay is pretty good, with the colourful eggs keeping it interesting, but the Wild symbols make frequent appearances, with nice animations and of course, some great features that can bring in lots of wins at once. If I'm being picky, (and I am), when players get 75 free spins it can be a bit boring watching them play out, but that's hardly the end of the world.
