Strange alien plants inhabit the reels of Fruitoids, which is another visually impressive pokie from Yggdrasil Gaming. It's a deceptively simple game that manages lots of winning spins and a special bonus with each one that can bring in up to 62,500 coins when the right symbols turn up at the right time.
The layout of Fruitoids is fairly standard, with 5 reels and 25 paylines, but that’s about the end of it being a standard pokie, as it all looks and plays in the quirky style that Yggdrasil are famed for. Opening up the game, the dazzling design is obvious, with a backdrop of a brightly coloured alien forest, and the symbols floating in front, for a nice 3D effect.
Just 7 symbols decorate the reels, each one being a different Fruitoid, and each having a different value attached to it. They are all so strange looking that they kind of defy description, so I’ll just name them by their colours, and let you see the game for yourself.
Payouts are triggered by getting 3 or more of the same symbol across one of the lines, starting from the left side, and like most games in this range, all lines are permanently activated, so there’s no option to just wager on just a few of them.
The Blue/Orange and Red Fruitoids pay out 3, 8, and 20 coins for getting 3, 4 or 5 across a line, while the Pink and Orange/Purple ones have values of 4, 10 and 30 coins. Moving up, there’s a 50 coin win with 5 Blue Fruitoids and 100 with the Orange one, with the biggest wins of 20. 100 and 500 coins being reserved for the big Purple plant that rounds out the collection.

Whichever symbols line up for a win, they all trigger the same bonus round, which may be the only one, but it’s a good ‘un, so bear with it. Any symbols that made up the winning combination immediately get zapped by an energy beam which freezes them into position, so for example, if 3 Blue Fruitoids land for a win, players will get an initial 8 coin payout, then, all the remaining spots on the reels spin once more. Sticking to our Blue Fruitoid example, if any further Blue ones land, these will also freeze in place, and another respin is triggered.
This carries on until a spin takes place where no more of the triggering symbol appears, which in practice can mean most of the reels are covered in it. Once the round stops, all the winnings are calculated, but it’s not as straightforward as that, as a Column Multiplier kicks in for any reels that are completely covered in the symbol. So, should 2 consecutive reels, running from the left, be covered in the triggering symbol, the payout is doubled, if 3 of them are, then it’s a tripled payout, and 4 adjacent reels filled with the symbol equals a quadrupled win. Getting all five reels totally covered of course means a win multiplier of 5x, but you would be pretty lucky to get it.
If winning combinations of a different symbol appear during the round, players still get the payout associated with it, although the respin feature won’t come into play for this one.
