Fruit machines have been popular since the very first Poker machines were brought out, but they tend to be pretty featureless games where players just watch the symbols spin around, collecting wins when they line up in the right places. While that's fine for many people, it can be a bit, well, dull, and most are looking for something extra for their pokies play.
How about taking a look at Pyrons, from Yggdrasil Gaming? It's got the traditional fruit emblems, but they are all brought right up to date, with sharp graphics and smooth animations, while the game has some bonus features that can bring in some huge multiplier wins.
Pyrons (strange name, but never mind), has 5 reels and 20 paylines to give players a bet range from 0.20 to 40.00 a spin. Symbols of oranges, limes, cherries and apples are the main ones that are going to appear, but a star and '7' are also in the mix and are the highest paying symbols, with up to 2,500 coins for a line of 7, turning up across the reels.
Unlike some other Yggdrasil Gaming pokies, the lines only run from left to right, not both ways, so wins occur when identical symbols line up from reels 1 to 3, with the bigger payouts coming into effect if reels 4 and 5 are included.
All the symbols have a futuristic look to them, so anyone expecting the same old fruit symbols that they have seen a zillion other pokies will either be disappointed or pleased depending on what they are looking for. Personally, I think it’s nice to play a traditional game with a twist, and I wouldn’t expect anything else from Yggdrasil Gaming, who always manage to come up with something different with each game that they release. Each type of fruit, the star and the 7 are held inside what looks like glass spheres, half full of liquid that sloshes around a bit as the symbols turn up on the reels.
How those symbols turn up is of major importance in this game, as it features cascading reels, which is becoming quite a popular system on pokies from Yggdrasil and other developers. With cascading reels, all symbols drop down into place from the top of the screen, and any that make up a winning combination will disappear.
This leaves empty spaces for symbols to drop down into, and if that results in another winning combination the whole process repeats itself. In the case of Pyrons, any second win will be subject to a 2x multiplier, while a third consecutive win will be trebled in value and anyone lucky enough to get a fourth will have their win multiplied by 5x. Anyone who’s really lucky, (and I mean really, really lucky because I’ve got nowhere near it), can have their win multiplied by 20x over if a fifth consecutive win results from the cascading reels feature.
In theory, a win of 2,500 coins could be multiplied by 20x, and at maximum bet that’s a huge 100.000 prize, but that’s the perfect scenario, although having said that, multiplier wins are still pretty common in this game.
With no Wilds or Scatters, the cascading reels and their multipliers are really the only feature of Pyrons, but they still lift the game above the normal style of fruit machines. Also typical of a game from Yggdrasil are the nice animations that add to the visual appeal, with symbols exploding all over the place and the win amount accompanied by the liquid inside each symbol sphere seeming to catch fire. As long as players aren’t looking for multiple bonus rounds, and know what to expect, it’s a highly rewarding game to play, although I still can’t work out where they got the name ‘Pyrons’ from.
