Fishy fun and a feast of freebies are waiting for players in the Reef Run pokie from Yggdrasil Gaming. The undersea world is a popular theme, and they have kind of jumped on the bandwagon by bringing out a game that on first acquaintance looks similar to several others, but there are enough features here to make it rise above the waves, ensure that players won't have to shell out too much, and should have them hooked on the free games in no time. O.K., I'll stop the bad puns and get on with it now.
Reef Run is presented with a bright blue watery background, and has some well designed sea creatures, who look like the cast of a certain Pixar movie, as symbols. Most pokies have at least eight to ten different symbols, but here there are only six, which should in theory give players more chance to line identical ones across the five reels and twenty paylines.
Each character has different values attached to them, ranging from the Seahorse to the Puffer fish, with an Octopus, Snail, Lobster and Crab completing the basic line up. In fact, that's pretty much it, as there's no Wild symbol, or high cards to fill up the reels. What you do get however, is a Free Spins icon that does just what you may have already guessed, and rewards players with extra games at no additional cost.
The number of free spins depends on the number of bonus symbols that land on the reels after a spin, with no need for them to be across a payline to trigger the round. Only two are needed to get two free spins, three of them equals ten games, four will start off twenty free spins, and a generous sixty will begin if five land at once.
It's not your average free spins round though, with a special 'Level Up' feature in play throughout. Before they start, players are given a brief introduction to how it works, but it's a little complicated to start with, although once the free spins are running, it's actually fairly logical.
Any symbol that makes up a winning combination will be given a multiplier amount, which will depend on its' value in the main game, so for example the Puffer fish will be worth more than the Seahorse. Players don't get the multiplier win straight away though, but should that symbol make up a further winning combination during the free spins, the amount won will be then be multiplied. Should it land again, the win is even bigger, with up to twenty times the base value possible.
Several symbols can level up during the round, and if players are lucky enough to have triggered sixty games, then the chances are that by the end of them most will be paying out bigger prizes with every winning combination.
Just two more Free Spins symbols appearing during the round will be enough to re-trigger a couple more spins.
Reef Run can be played from just 0.20 per spin, and at maximum bet, players will be wagering 40.00 a go. All twenty lines are automatically covered by a bet, which some players don't like, but it prevents the frustrating situation where a big win occurs on a line that hasn't been staked on.
As far as undersea themed pokies go, Reef Run has it's good points and bad ones. Basic play is unspectacular, so luckily the free spins seem to get triggered pretty often, as without them it would be a feature-free game. It's a shame there's no Wild symbol to bring in extra wins, but other than these minor complaints, it's a fun game overall, and certainly looks good.
